Three Privacy Modes, Your Choice

MurmurType offers three distinct privacy modes. Choose the one that fits your needs best.

Information We Collect

Account Information

  • Email address (for authentication via Clerk)
  • License and subscription data (managed through Polar.sh)
  • API keys (stored locally in macOS Keychain)

Audio Data

Local Mode: Audio never leaves your device

Direct OpenAI Mode: Audio sent directly to OpenAI (not to our servers)

MurmurGate Mode: Audio processed temporarily on our servers, not stored

Technical Information

  • App version and system information (for support)
  • Error logs (stored locally, first ~10 characters of transcripts for debugging)
  • License verification data

The Simple Version:
We collect your email for login, your payment info for licenses, and some basic app info to help when things go wrong. Your audio? That depends on which mode you choose! 🎤

How We Use Your Information

Core Functionality

  • Authenticate your account and manage sessions
  • Process audio transcription based on your chosen mode
  • Manage licenses and subscriptions
  • Provide customer support

Service Improvement

  • Debug technical issues (using minimal data)
  • Analyze usage patterns for service optimization
  • Ensure license compliance

Legal Requirements

  • Comply with tax and financial regulations
  • Respond to legal requests when required
  • Protect against fraud and abuse

Simple Version:
We use your info to make the app work, help you when things break, and keep the lawyers happy with tax stuff. That's it! 📋

Where Your Data Lives

Technical Details

Local mode: All data remains on your device

Direct OpenAI mode: Data transmitted directly to OpenAI servers (governed by OpenAI's privacy policy)

MurmurGate mode: Temporary processing on Google Cloud Platform infrastructure with automatic encryption at rest. Authentication data stored in Clerk's GDPR-compliant servers (Ireland-based with DPF certification)

What We Control vs. Third Parties:
• MurmurType servers: Your account data, credit balances, license history
• Clerk (GDPR-compliant): Authentication, user profiles
• Polar.sh (GDPR-compliant): Payment processing, subscription management
• OpenAI/Anthropic: When you use Direct mode, data goes straight to them

Simple Version:
Local = stays on your Mac
OpenAI direct = goes straight to OpenAI
MurmurGate = quick pit stop on our secure servers, then off to AI providers! 🔐

Data Sharing

Service Providers

  • Clerk: Authentication and user management
  • Polar.sh: Payment processing and subscription management
  • Google Cloud Platform: Infrastructure for MurmurGate mode
  • OpenAI/Anthropic: AI processing when using Direct mode

Legal Disclosure

We may disclose information when required by law, to protect our rights, or to protect users' safety. We will notify you of such disclosures unless prohibited by law.

Business Transfers

In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, user information may be transferred. We will provide notice before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

Simple Version:
We share your data with our trusted partners to make the app work (login, payments, AI processing). We don't sell your data to advertisers or random companies! 🤝

Data Retention

What MurmurType Controls

  • Account data: Follows Clerk's GDPR-compliant retention policy (typically 90 days after service termination, manual deletion available)
  • License history: Maintained for legal compliance (typically 7 years)
  • Transaction records: Kept as required by tax regulations
  • Usage logs: Currently no automatic deletion (manual cleanup available)

Third-Party Retention

  • Clerk: Follows their GDPR-compliant retention policy
  • Polar.sh: Payment data retained per their privacy policy
  • OpenAI/Anthropic: When using Direct mode, governed by their policies

You may request immediate deletion by contacting miko@murmurtype.me

Simple Version:
Close your account? Clerk (our login provider) deletes your data according to their GDPR-compliant policy (typically 90 days, or sooner if you ask). We keep billing records longer because the tax folks require it! 📊

Third parties (Clerk, Polar) have their own deletion schedules, but they're all GDPR-compliant! ✅

Security Measures

Technical Security

All data transmissions use industry-standard TLS encryption. API keys are stored using macOS Keychain with hardware-level security. Our Google Cloud Platform infrastructure includes encryption at rest by default.

Third-Party Security

  • Clerk: SOC 2 Type II compliant, DPF certified
  • Polar.sh: GDPR-compliant with appropriate technical measures
  • OpenAI/Anthropic: Enterprise-grade security when using Direct mode

Access Controls

Access to user data is restricted to authorized personnel only.

Everything's encrypted in transit and at rest. Your API keys are locked in Apple's super-secure Keychain. We take security seriously! 🔒

Our partners (Clerk, Polar) are all security-certified too! 🛡️

Your Rights

Data Rights

  • Access: Request a copy of your personal data
  • Rectification: Correct inaccurate personal data
  • Erasure: Request deletion of your personal data
  • Portability: Receive your data in a structured format
  • Restriction: Limit how we process your data
  • Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interests

Children's Privacy

MurmurType is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at miko@murmurtype.me.

Simple Version:
This app is for grown-ups (13+). If a kid somehow signed up, let us know and we'll fix it! 👶

International Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place:

  • Clerk: DPF certification for EU-US transfers
  • Polar.sh: GDPR-compliant with appropriate safeguards
  • Google Cloud: Standard Contractual Clauses and security measures

Simple Version:
Your data might travel internationally, but it's always protected with the same security standards! 🌍

Debug Information

For debugging purposes, the app logs the first ~10 characters of transcripts locally using Apple's OSLog framework. This data never leaves your device and is automatically managed by macOS.

We peek at the first few characters of your transcripts for debugging (like "Hello wor..."), but it all stays on your Mac! 🔍

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new privacy policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. For material changes, we will provide additional notice (such as email notification).

Your continued use of MurmurType after any changes indicates your acceptance of the updated privacy policy.
